"Bringing you yesterday's gaming news, today!"

Trip Hawkins is one of the gaming industry's hottest players, so it's no surprise that Nintendo is feeling the pressure of his latest venture; a games system that will provide all the family's entertainment needs.

Working in collaboration with TV giant Panasonic, this as-yet unnamed entertainment machine promises to bring not only a wealth of futuristic gaming potential to people's living rooms, but a dazzling array of multimedia entertainment in one powerhouse unit.

The news has apparently spooked Nintendo into some pretty drastic action. The New Retro News team is as aware as every gamer out there that  the SNES remains a serious contender for the lead gaming system, but the technology is already falling behind. In answer to Hawkins' proposed new super machine, Nintendo is allegedly following suite and teaming up with a TV manufacturer - in this case, Sony.

The New Retro News team has something of a cynical reputation around the EgoGamer offices, and our desperation meter is currently off the scale. Sony has precisely no experience in the games industry, so quite what Nintendo believes it can bring to a next generation machine is anyone's guess. With Hawkins behind a new system, anything's possible, so Panasonic at least has good marketing sense on its side.

Competition is certainly no bad thing, but if EgoGamer chose to pick sides in the expectedly short console war looming on the horizon, out money will be on Hawkins. We predict Nintendo will about turn pretty rapidly when it realizes the limited potential Sony proposes in the videogame industry, while Panasonic and Hawkins make a formidable team destined to go down in console history.

Get saving, readers - you're not going to want to miss the interactive multimedia revolution Trip's brewing right now.
